Overlay a Training Tour on Salesforce Without Touching Salesforce's Code

Empower your team with interactive training directly on Salesforce, no developers or custom code required. Learn how Beacon's Chrome Extension lets you build guided tours visually, right on the live page.

Engineering Team·

Training new hires or rolling out complex process changes in Salesforce can feel like a high-stakes game of telephone. You explain it, they try it, and inevitably, someone misses a step – or worse, misunderstands the entire workflow. The old ways – PDFs, static videos, or shoulder-to-shoulder coaching – just don't cut it for a system as dynamic and critical as Salesforce.

The real challenge? Salesforce isn't designed for overlaying interactive guides, and asking developers to build in-app tours for internal training often means a long wait time and a significant cost. Most teams simply don't have that bandwidth for what should be a straightforward training solution.

This is where Beacon's Chrome Extension shines. It allows anyone on your team – sales ops, enablement managers, even the users themselves – to build interactive tours directly on top of Salesforce, or any web application, without writing a single line of code or needing access to Salesforce's backend. Think of it as a layer you draw on top of an existing application, guiding users precisely where they need to go and what they need to do.

Let's walk through how you can set up a quick training tour for a common Salesforce task, like creating a new Opportunity.

Step 1: Install the Beacon Chrome Extension

First things first. Head to the Chrome Web Store and install the Beacon Chrome Extension. It’s a quick install, and once it's there, you’ll see the Beacon icon appear in your browser's toolbar. Log in with your Beacon account, and you're ready to start building. This is your portal to a no-code tour builder.

Step 2: Navigate to Your Salesforce Instance

Open your Salesforce environment in a new Chrome tab. Go to the exact page where you want your tour to begin. For our example, let's start from the Salesforce homepage or a list view that leads to creating a new Opportunity. The beauty here is that you're building on the live application, interacting with it exactly as your users will.

Step 3: Start Building Your Tour

Click the Beacon extension icon in your toolbar. You'll see a purple builder bar appear across the top of the page. This is your command center. Click "New Tour" to start a fresh guide.

Beacon will then enter "builder mode," highlighting elements on the page as you hover over them. This visual picker is incredibly powerful; it automatically grabs stable CSS selectors for the elements you choose, ensuring your tour reliably targets the right buttons and fields, even if the surrounding page content changes slightly.

Step 4: Add Your First tooltip Step

Let’s start guiding. If your tour begins by instructing users to find the "New Opportunity" button, hover over it until it's highlighted, then click. The builder will prompt you to choose a step type. Select tooltip.

Now, add a title and some body text for this step. Something like:

  • Title: Welcome to Opportunity Creation!
  • Body: "We'll walk you through creating a new Opportunity. First, click 'New Opportunity' to get started."

You can customize the tooltip's position, add a CTA button, and even apply per-step CSS if you want to fine-tune its appearance. I always recommend keeping the content concise here; users are trying to do something, not read a novel.

Step 5: Guide User Actions with clickwait

After instructing the user to click "New Opportunity," your tour needs to wait for them to actually perform that action. This is where the clickwait step comes in. With the new Opportunity creation page loaded, click the Beacon icon again, hover over the "New Opportunity" button (or wherever the user just clicked), and select clickwait.

This step type tells Beacon: "Pause the tour until the user clicks this specific element." It’s crucial for interactive guides because it makes the user an active participant, reinforcing learning through action. Without it, your tour would just race ahead, leaving users bewildered.

Step 6: Automate Form Filling with autofill

Now you're on the "New Opportunity" form. Many fields here might have standard values or be boilerplate. Instead of making your users manually type 'USD' into the 'Currency' field every time, why not automate it?

Hover over the 'Currency' field, click it, and select autofill. Enter USD as the value. You can add a tooltip before this autofill step to explain what's happening, e.g., "We're auto-filling standard values to speed things up."

I find autofill to be one of Beacon's most underutilized capabilities for internal training. It's not just about saving clicks; it's about enforcing best practices and reducing cognitive load, especially on complex or rarely used forms. If a field always gets the same value, don't make your staff remember it.

Step 7: Continue Building & Refine

Keep adding steps: tooltip for explanations, clickwait for interactions, navigate to move between different Salesforce pages, video for longer explanations, or even chat-input if you want to integrate AI help directly into the tour. Build out the entire workflow, step by precise step.

As you build, use the "Preview" mode in the builder bar to test your tour. Run through it yourself, ensuring every step triggers correctly and the guidance is clear. Once you're happy, hit "Publish." Your tour is now live and ready to be assigned to staff.

Beyond Salesforce: A Universal Training Solution

The same principles apply to any other enterprise app your team uses – HubSpot, SAP, Notion, you name it. Beacon's Chrome Extension makes it possible to overlay training on virtually any web-based tool. This means a consistent, interactive training experience across your entire tech stack, all managed from one central Beacon dashboard.

For enterprise teams, this capability also extends to compliance. You can assign these tours as courses, track completion, and generate immutable audit evidence – critical for ISO 27001 or SOC 2 certifications. It's not just training; it's verifiable, accountable learning.

Stop relying on outdated training methods or waiting for developers to build internal tooling. Your team needs to be proficient in Salesforce, and they need it now. With Beacon, you put that power directly into the hands of your enablement team, ensuring everyone knows how to use your critical business applications correctly and efficiently.
